The Copland Track

The Copland Track is the most famous track in Westland Tai Poutini. It was built from 1901 to 1913 to connect elements of the west coast to the border region between Westland Tai Poutini and Mount Cook National Park.

During the first part of the track, visitors cross Rough Creek and walk along the Copland River. Both may gain in size after heavy rainfall which may cause difficulties along the way. From the Karangarua River up to Architect Creek, the track leads through forests, grasslands and riverbeds. The path then rises in altitude up to the highest point of the track - an area known for landslide activity. Before arriving at the Welcome Flat Pools, the Copland Track passes over to denser vegetated ribbon wood forest.

Due to the merciless alpine weather conditions, it took twelve years to complete the track since parts of it were regularly damaged through snow and ice erosion. The Copland Track, however, stands out due to its strong contrast between icy weather and rewarding hot springs.
